Product Details

Wrinkly, sweet, and fun, this is the most beautiful of all cabbages. What is not to like. It does not have that rubbery feel that many Savory Cabbages do, but is more crispy and just lovely. It is delicious as a slaw or cooked as in this recipe, or made into sauerkraut.

It is best to start this cabbage indoors or greenhouse about six weeks before your last possible frost, and then transplant into our well prepared, highly organically rich soil in your gardens or pots. You can redo this in the early summer with more seeds, in the early summer for late summer or early fall picking. Cabbage are nutrient hogs so need rich and well fertilized soils. They also prefer cooler temps if at all possible but you can regulate that too by placing them where they will only receive morning sun. Full sun plants only seed 6 hours of sun each day.

Folklore

There is a bit of folklore associated with cabbage and we must remember that in times of old, parents told children that the cabbage patch is where babies come from. In the English culture cabbage is thought to increase fertility. In Scotland children who wanted a baby brother or sister would lay cabbage leaves around their front door. I bet mom and dad just loved that. Then, of course you must know that you must eat cabbage on New Years Day in order to have luck (or money) in the coming year.
