Product Details

This single hollyhock was described in 1629 by English botanist John Parkinson as being “of a dark red like black blood.” It appears black on overcast days, but will have a hint of red in bright sun.For a better contrast and to make them show off, plant them next to something that is a lighter in clear color so you are creating a beautiful bouquet. They are self-seeding biennials, which means they bloom in their second year and that their seeds will bloom from two years previously. They can reach 5-6’ tall so plant them at the back of your flower beds.

This variety of hollyhock also makes beautiful colors as a natural dye.Pale blue to periwinkle blue - and light green to a nice dark green, depending upon which mordent you use.But they color well without a mordant.

They need good moisture but do not let them stand in wet soils.Do not allow to dry out though.Soil needs to be enriched with compost for good fertilization. As the blooms fade cut back the large stem which will encourage more blooms to start. However, leave some of the seed pods on the stems, to dry, and reseed over the winter to produce your next flowers.
